About Wind Hill Community Farm
Wind Hill Community Farm and Learning Center
Wind Hill Community Farm and Learning Center was founded in 2010 by a small group of friends and neighbors who had an interest in developing a community farm. They envisioned a small farm where people could grow their own vegetables and enjoy a sense of camaraderie and friendship. Their ideas grew into a 501c3 non-profit organization which was able to lease 2 acres from the town of Glastonbury on the Longo Farm Open Space on Hebron Avenue.
How We Grew:
-
Federal Grants supporting small local agriculture endeavors allowed us to secure a hoop house and install a well with a solar powered pump
-
Through the support of the Sestero Fund of Greater Hartford Gives Foundation(formerly the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving), we were able to construct 30 raised garden beds for rental to people for growing vegetables for themselves and their families.
-
Additional grants from the Sestero Fund of Greater Hartford Gives Foundation, Hartford Foundation Community Grants, and the Connecticut Department of Agriculture have enabled us to amend the property to reduce erosion, fence a large field to grow crops for the community, install solar-powered pumping and drip irrigation, and erect a small pavilion to serve as an activity shelter.
Our Current Functions:
We grow vegetables using sustainable practices and only natural methods of pest and disease control.
-vegetables are offered for sale at the farm
-vegetables are donated to the food pantry weekly
We offer a variety of educational programs.
-classes on native plants, attracting beneficial insects and pollinators
- a series of children's summer camp sessions focusing on growing vegetables and many aspects of the natural environment
- an annual spring bird identification walk, and informal instruction on invasive plants
- student practicums/internships for Glastonbury High School and UCONN students.
We encourage our gardeners and volunteers to share their knowledge, successes and challenges and happy moments at the farm. We proudly support the Town of Glastonbury Food Pantry with donations of fresh produce.
Become Part of Wind Hill:
Wind Hill Community Farm is an all-volunteer organization, and we welcome everyone to come and enjoy our beautiful space, overlooking the Connecticut River Valley. Bring your family and friends and a picnic, sit quietly and watch the many birds drawn to our gardens, join us on a full moon hike in the fall, or come for one of our classes. If your business or service organization supports volunteer projects, please contact us to arrange a day at the farm. We hope to see you soon!
